New species of grass (Elytrigia) introduced
Research team led by Assistant Professor Yang Hongshan and Professor Chang Genzhu of the Lanzhou Institute of Husbandry and Pharmaceutical Sciences (LIHPS) of CAAS, with collaboration with Gansu Agricultural University successfully come out with new species “Continent Intermediate Elytrigia” after 10 years’ effort in breeding. It is a perennial herb characterized by strong root, tillering ability, erect stem, wide & long & dark green leaves. The salient feature of the variety is tender green stems and leaves, high grass yield and rich in nutrients.
Species Elytrigia is excellent forage as it is used as an eco-grass for grass reseeding in the degraded grassland. It is highly adaptable to region with characteristic of aridity, semi-arid and semi-humid of Loess plateau and in northern similar regions.
