Crop Breeding

Wheat:

The application of conventional cross breeding combined with wide hybridization and recurrent selection, anther culture, induced mutation breeding resources for wheat breeding with objectives of developing high quality, stress tolerant and high yield wheat varieties.

Soybean:

Through high density planting of new varieties of soybean with a yield target of 1.5t/ha.

Maize:

The potential hybrid combinations for high yielding varieties with good overall agronomic traits were selected focusing on short growing periods suitable for rotational farming systems under cool and arid weather conditions. High quality protein maize (QPM)were further selected, as the "Zhongdan9409"has its free amino acid content 1-3 times higher than the normal varieties, with an average yield potential of 10.5/ha and highest of 15t/ha.

Rapeseeds:

Different from the present Nca A-line, new Nca A-line and its related B-line have been developed.

Rice:

The China National Rice Research Institute of CAAS has successfully transferred japonica rice genes to indica rice and developed a series of new varieties and sterile lines as well as restore lines. The utilization is a major strategic option for the "super rice" breeding program.

Mutation breeding and space shuttle breeding programs:

Through induced mutation selection, new varieties were obtained for wheat, corn, sorghum, soybeans, sweet peas and a range of other crops. Returning satellites and high altitude balloons are used in amelioration crops and probing the space environment mutation mechanism.

Cotton:

Developing the Delfhi system for a quality, high yield cotton production system. Research on growth and development conditions under plastic mulch. Establishing and modifying the parameters for GOSSYM model and developing varieties for mechanical harvesting.
